Hey there I’m Emma from mmmEnglish!

I’ve created today’s lesson so that you can practise advanced English conversation. It will be just like we’re having a conversation together.

You’re going to practise speaking English with me. But throughout the conversation, you’ll see some advanced English expressions that are used in everyday casual conversations. These are going to be phrasal verbs, idioms and fixed expressions that are very common in spoken English.

These advanced expressions are essential to learn so I’ve made you a free PDF that goes with this lesson so that you can analyse some of the expressions and understand how they’re used in everyday contexts. The link to get that free PDF is down in the description below.

So this conversation is a casual everyday conversation between two friends who are catching up. So first, let’s watch me do the whole dialogue so that you can experience the complete conversation.

Ready?

Hey, long time no see! How are you? How’s your family?

Hi, yeah, I’m good! We’re all good! Tommy started school this year.

Are you serious? Last time I saw him, he was just a baby.

I know, time flies, right? It’s been a big transition for him but on the whole, he seems to be really loving it.

Oh well, that’s good to hear! My nephew really struggled when he started school.

Yeah, I’ve been really struck by how resilient kids are. Even when things are difficult, they adapt. Tommy used to be so shy but since he started school, he’s so sure of himself.

A confident little guy! Hey listen, I’ve got a favour to ask.

Sure, fire away!

We just found out we have to move house.

Oh no, that sucks!

Yeah, I can’t quite get my head around the fact that we have to leave and I feel totally out of the loop when it comes to finding a new place. Everything seems so expensive these days.

And moving house is a pain. Hang in there, I’m sure you’ll find something.

Well yes and this is where you come in. Seeing as you’re a real estate agent, I thought you might be able to recommend some places in the area.

I can’t think of anything off the top of my head but I’ll definitely let you know if I hear of anything.

Thank you, I’d appreciate that.

Actually, on second thoughts, we did have a new client come in this week with a portfolio of rental properties. I’ll look into it for you.

Oh that would be amazing, thank you! Listen, I have to run but let’s touch base next week.

Great, we’ll talk soon!

Great! Did you notice the expressions that were highlighted throughout the video? These are the ones that are included in your free PDF. Let me know which one of them was your favourite and which one you’ll try and use in a conversation this week.

So now, let’s split this dialogue. I’m going to say one line and then you say the next one out loud, okay? Just like we’re having a real conversation together. We’ll go back and forth, just like this, nice and natural, alright? You’ll see your part of the conversation appear up on screen exactly when you need to speak. Are you ready?

Okay, you want to swap now?

You can practise my part of the conversation and I’ll do yours, okay?

So you need to start.

Hi, yeah, I’m good! We’re all good! Tommy started school this year!

So here’s the thing, practising with me like this is great practice. We can keep doing this as much as you like but the next step, to take it a step further and instead of reading or repeating these expressions that you just learnt today, how can you actively use them in real conversations with other people and develop that experience using them in context? You can’t develop your speaking skills or improve your fluency without taking this step.

My online speaking community is a unique community for women who want to develop confidence and fluency as English speakers. Now I know that means that some of you are unable to join but by being a women-only space, there are so many advantages, especially for women who are developing their speaking skills because we feel nervous, we feel worried about making mistakes, and we need that environment to be as supportive and as fear-free as possible to help you step outside of your comfort zone.

Hey Lady! is a very supportive speaking community and the best part is that with your membership, you can practice as much as you like. If you’re new to Hey Lady!, come and check out our Instagram account, see members, read their stories, and their experiences and get some English tips and advice from our coaches. And if you want to become a Hey Lady! member today, the link is down in the description below and mmmEnglish students get fifteen per cent off their first payment so use the code MMM15.

That’s it from me today! Let me know if you enjoyed this lesson, give it a like or drop a little comment down below to say hi, and if you do want to review the expressions that we practised throughout this lesson today, check out this video right here because I teach all of them to you right there as well.

Let’s go check it out together!
