Are you ready to practise speaking English with me? Today’s speaking practice will focus on self-introduction at a job interview, how to introduce yourself professionally when you attend an interview.

We’re going to practise using the mmmEnglish Imitation Technique which is one of the most effective ways that you can relax your accent, fix your pronunciation problems so that you speak English more clearly and confidently.

It’s effective because it teaches you to hear the sounds and the patterns of English and it trains you to produce those same sounds and patterns yourself by repeating after me.

If you haven’t done a lesson like this before, don’t worry, it’s really simple and I’m going to explain each step for you as we go. This is a speaking practice lesson to help you with your self-introductions at a job interview. We’ll be role-playing a woman called Jessica who is a mid-level marketing manager applying for a job.

Now of course, not all of us are marketing managers but the language, the interactions and the important word choices are useful for all of us as we’re introducing ourselves at an interview.

Now if you want to dive deeper into the structures, the expressions and the useful collocations that are used throughout this dialogue today, I definitely recommend you download the workbook I’ve made you.

In it, I’ve highlighted key verbs and importantly collocations that you can use to speak with authority and expertise in your field. The link to that workbook is down in the description, I highly, highly recommend it.

Alright, let’s get started.

Step 1: Listen and read

So we’re just going to get familiar with the dialogue and the context first. Just listen.

Sarah: Welcome Jessica, it’s really great to meet you. I’m Sarah.

Jessica: Hi Sarah. It’s lovely to meet you. Thanks for having me in today.

Sarah: It’s my pleasure, Jessica. Before we dive into the interview questions, tell me a bit about yourself. What got you interested in marketing? And why did you apply for a position here at our company?

Jessica: Well, I’ve been fascinated by marketing theory ever since my university days but more recently, I’ve become interested in emerging technologies and trends, especially in the AI space. Your company’s approach to innovation and cutting-edge solutions aligns perfectly with my interests and my career goals. I’m excited about the possibility of contributing to such an innovative and incredible team.

Sarah: That’s great to hear, Jessica. Could you share a bit more about your background and the experience you bring to the table?

Jessica: Certainly. Over the past three years, I’ve had the privilege of working with various clients in the marketing industry from tech startups to established brands. My role involved crafting data-driven marketing strategies which included leveraging AI tools for improved customer targeting and personalisation. I’ve also been responsible for managing successful digital campaigns that drove significant return on investment. I believe my experience in utilising AI and staying up to date with industry trends could really add value to your team.

Sarah: That’s impressive, Jessica. We’re definitely looking for someone who can keep us at the forefront of marketing technology. Can you provide an example of a challenging project that you’ve worked on and how you approached it?

Jessica: Of course, thanks Sarah. One project that comes to mind was when I was working with Axiom. We had a client looking to revamp their customer engagement strategy and they wanted to incorporate AI chatbots into their customer support system. I took the lead in researching and implementing a chatbot solution that not only reduced response times but also improved customer satisfaction scores by twenty-five per cent within three months. It was a challenging yet rewarding experience and it reinforced my passion for AI-driven marketing solutions.

Sarah: Wow. It sounds like you’re not only knowledgeable but also passionate about what you do.

Step 2: Listen and copy

So now you’ll hear me speak but there will be a pause so that you can repeat out loud after me. Try to copy me exactly as you hear me and try to imitate my facial expressions too. Repeat this step as many times as you like until it starts to feel a little bit more natural. You can even slow down the speed to practise with me a little slower before returning to regular pace.

Sarah: Welcome Jessica. It’s really great to meet you, I’m Sarah.

Jessica: Hi, Sarah. It’s lovely to meet you. Thanks for having me in today.

Step 3: Shadow me

Okay, step three is a challenge. You need to shadow me and that means hearing the sounds and speaking at the same time. So you’ll probably get a little tongue-tied here and words might come out a little strange but don’t worry just try to copy the rhythm, the pace and the tone of my voice.

We’re focusing on different things this round but this is the best way to build awareness and to develop a natural rhythm in English.

I’ll show you where to pause and where to emphasise and because you’re practising in real time, you’ll be able to adjust and make changes to your pronunciation while you practise with me.

Sarah: Welcome, Jessica. It’s really great to meet you, I’m Sarah.

Congratulations for making it all the way through! Make sure you save this lesson to a playlist so that you can keep coming back to practise with me as you need to prepare for interviews.

Now Emma’s got a little bit of homework for you.

You’ve been practising with me as an example but if you get the workbook, you can analyse the words and the expressions that I used during my excellent self-introduction and you can write your own. That means you can make the script relevant to you, to your career and to your job opportunities.

If you share your responses down in the comments below the video and you do it this week, I’m sure Emma will find the time to jump down and give you a little bit of feedback as well.

Thanks for watching and I’ll see you in the next lesson.
